Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Wednesday, 14 August 2019? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

Perpetual Yo-yoing, feel robbed of a Childhood.

I'm here to loose it for good. In a healthy & sane way, God willing.

I've been noticeably chubby since I was five years old. I remember the moment I looked down and noticed a small belly, and asked my parents "am I fat?" for the first time. I have a history of putting on large quantities of weight, and going to extreme measures to loose it, at the goading of my parents. They had me on a modified version of the Adkins diet before fourth grade. And thus, I've always been extraordinarily conscious about my body: I've never not worn a T-Shirt to the beach, played sport without a top, nor gone swimming without a top (at least publicly). Of course, sex regularly comes with a t-shirt firmly affixed. My weight has perpetually been the worst enemy I cannot seem to divorce myself from. Im about 5'11"— between the 10th and 11th grades (US), I went from 183lbs down to 152-ish in a single 3-month summer because I keto-ed out of my mind. I counted every calorie and carb like a maniac. I bounced back up to around the 168-175 fairly quickly around the start of school that year, but in all fairness 170lbs on a 5'11" frame isn't awful– unfortunately no one ever told me this. No one close to me celebrated my weight loss as an accomplishment, but rather during the entire time I was skinny my parents kept up the rhetoric that I still could afford to loose weight. They would closely monitor my weight, and I was led to believe that even at 170-something, I was fat and unlikeable. I wasn't "complete". I needed to do more.

Fortunately for me, (/s) I managed to catch the ol' depression a couple of years into college, and was left with a lot of time on my hands from a semester I involuntarily took off. While at home, I was treated like a human trainwreck. I was a leaky plumbing problem that needed a quick fix. So, I was forced up daily at 5am to do insanely tiresome workouts that I was never really eager to do in the first place. I shed weight quick, and I was back at 165lbs, but once I was readmitted to school, I ballooned to 205lbs, 215lbs, and eventually 240lbs. The stretch marks came, as did my double chin. I was reconfirmed in the belief that I'd just always be fat. That's how it was, and thats how it had to be.

However, I can't take it anymore. I am starting to notice health problems that could become chronic, and I want to live long. I'm 23 years old, and I cant walk up a stairs without getting winded. I don't like sitting in a window seat because it takes extra energy to pull myself out into the aisle and stand up. I'm sedentary, and I hate the gym. Right now I live with my parents, and they propose wholly unhealthy ways of loosing weight. They still make me weigh in front of them daily, like they did when I was 16. Like, no sorry dad, I'm not gonna eat "just one egg" today. Unfortunately I'm just so, so, so exhausted. I'm tired of the fad diets, I'm tired of the diets diets, I just want to make a permanent lifestyle change, so that I can no longer be defined by my weight ever again.

Is power-walking an effective weight loss method?

Last week, my fiancΓ© and I began power-walking because the gym near us is way too busy when we are able to go. Every day, we walk 2.4 miles which takes about 40ish minutes. Walking seemed like an easy workout idea, but we are really pushing ourselves and dripping sweat at the end. We push each day to beat our previous time and my heart rate stays at about 160-185 throughout the walk. Is this good enough to shed some pounds? We are also eating healthier too! Does anyone have any additional tips or workouts? I’ve thought about doing lunges while we walk (once I build my stamina), and jogging as well.

I'm a distance runner, she is trying to lose a lot of weight...how can we plan meals that work for both of us?

Hi everyone, my partner and I have found ourselves in a bit of a challenging situation regarding meal planning and I'm looking for some advice. We like to cook and eat together, and we really enjoy planning our meals and trying new recipes that we find online, so we're open minded to any of your suggestions.

The problem is that our needs are so different - see below for our height/weight:

Me: 29M, 5'11" (180cm) / 160lb (72.5kg), approx. kcal goal is 2700/day

Her: 30F, 5'4" (163cm) / 180lb (81.6kg), approx kcal goal is 1600/day

About a year ago, I started running with C25K, fell in love with running, and am now running about 30 miles (48 km) per week just to maintain my fitness and sanity. I'm at my goal weight and don't have any goals to change that (up or down), but on running days I sometimes have to log my food to make sure I'm eating enough. I've found that running absolutely kills my appetite and sometimes I'll realize I'm at a pretty significant calorie deficit before bed, which I'll remedy with a late night snack...and then maybe another snack an hour later if needed to hit my calorie goals.

For my partner, things are a bit different. She has had some health problems that have made it harder for her to exercise similarly - some recurring issues with her foot and GI system cause her a lot of pain. It simply isn't possible for her to maintain the same level of activity as I am right now. She really wants to lose weight but has been constantly discouraged and frustrated by her health problems, and I'm looking for some ideas from you all to make the process easier for her. She's working with doctors to figure out what's going on, but these things can take a while to figure out. I should also note that her weight has bothered her for most of her adult life so there is a significant emotional component there too.

One of the difficulties I've noticed recently is that I frequently buy high-calorie snacks for the house, since I need a lot of calories (cheese, nuts, and sugar cereal because let's be honest that stuff is amazing) - but then she feels a lot of temptation to eat those because they're around. I've tried to get around this recently by only buying the kinds of snacks she doesn't like, but that doesn't change the fact that she feels sad and I feel guilty when I can eat with seemingly no reservations while she has to weigh everything and count every calorie in every ingredient. I've lost weight through calorie counting before and it is damn tough!

When it comes to meal planning, we've actually done a pretty good job over the years of coming up with a number of lower-calorie meals that are really tasty and filling. The problem with that is that I don't have a huge appetite, so if we eat those kinds of meals I still eat a relatively small amount and I have to eat like 5 times a day to not lose weight.

So I guess I'm trying to figure out how I can help her without hurting my own calorie needs. If I had similar goals, we could just remove all of the high calorie food from the house and then it would be relatively easy to make meals that met both of our needs, but some days I'll literally need to eat twice as much as her! When I leave high calorie food around, then that provides temptation for her to eat it which hurts her weight loss goals. How can I best be supportive of her? I'm willing to help shop, cook, etc. as needed but our needs are just so different!

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate whatever advice you may have for this situation.

Went to get a dress tailored for my best friend’s upcoming wedding, turns out I’ve dropped down 2 sizes!

I am in the wedding party for my best friend ( as a grooms-woman) and bought a dress back in February at a bridal shop, I was initially fitted as a size 22.

I made a pact with the bride, whom I’ve become good friends with, back in January to try and work off some weight and have a healthier lifestyle (as we are both bigger women and want to work towards a better version of ourselves)

Yesterday went to a local tailoring shop, thinking I just needed a hem, but it turned out I also needed to resize my dress! I’m so excited!

I temporarily fell off the weight loss wagon as I had surgery back in June, and couldn’t move around much for a few weeks. I was a bit depressed and indulged in a lot of comfort food. I am still healing, but after a month I was feeling well enough to to start walking again to and from work ( With the ok πŸ‘ from the nurse, as long as I didn’t over do it)

Anyways I just wanted to share this with someone, and that I’m feeling better physically and mentally. I am looking forward to the wedding and not be so self conscious about pictures. I still have a ways to go before I hit my optimal weight, but I know it will come in time with hard work and patience.

Thanks for listening and I sincerely hope all the best with your own weight loss journey, we’re in this together! ❤️

Have you tried the NEW Chobani yogurts? The company recently released 5 new flavors – all featuring nut butter along with their signature Greek yogurt. I spotted them a while back and grabbed 4 of the 5 flavors. And on a recent trip to Target they had all 5 flavors on display. I knew it […]
