How can you tell the diet you've chosen isn't going to work well for you?

I am asking this question coming from the perspective that I have done umpteen diets throughout my life, and I can pretty much tell that in my body, anyway, I can see the signs that something is "already" not going to work well. Last year, I was following a calorie counting diet, 1300 calories per day. Last year I eventually lost 20 pounds between May and the beginning of December. Then I was "convinced" by my mother that I could take a break around the holidays and pick up after January started. Easier said than done, because over the holidays, I got some kind of affliction that made me intolerant to FODMAPS and I had to follow that diet for a while, which is totally not a weight loss diet (I gained the 20 pounds back and some). You are stuck with a slim selection of foods, and specific breads and starches, and if you want to eat anything you have to be an excellent cook - I don't cook and I don't want to. I ended up living on GF spaghetti and Low FODMAP sauce, made in the microwave. Counting calories I could get no lower than 1500, and that is 200 calories more than my body wants. When it seemed like the FODMAP problem had resolved, I chose WW Green Plan on Itrackbites/Healthi app to pick up the dieting (I am 5ft1, female and when I started in May again I was 199 lbs). I did well the first month. Then suddenly nothing. I have hit a slow dive to nothing. I tracked. I exercised. This is the point in my dieting where I start to sense "something" is wrong with the plan that I picked, and this is not going to get me even as far as I got last year.

I understand that the start of a diet is usually rather good and eventually things slow down. But I have a really slow metabolism due to Thyroid (which I have always been on meds for, they seem to make little difference) and going thru Menopause this year doesn't help that either. I have done a lot of diets, and I expect the weight loss to slow, but I sense when it starts to crash already and I haven't even lost 10 pounds yet (I have lost 8, but I know some of that was probably water), and now not only have I not lost in the last two weeks, this week my weight went up one pound. Still tracking meticulously, still exercising. Granted, last year wasn't a speedy loss either, technically on CICO I should have lost more than 20 pounds in the time period given (again, I track like a pro, and when I am in the diet mindset I am no cheater). But I was eating a lot of junk because when I do CICO, I tend to get the mindset that I don't want to waste my calories on veggies and fruit. Unfortunately, with the WW plans, they give free veggies and (depending on the plan) fruit (the plan I chose does have free fruit), so I have a tendency to eat a lot of fruit whenever I get hungry. But Itrackbites/Healthi can track both calories and Smart Points, and I haven't been overeating the fruit.

TLDR: For those of you out there who have switched which diet you are on after doing one that didn't seem to be working, how long did you hang on to the diet that was not-working before you tried something else? What are the signs you've seen that tell you "nahh, this isn't going to do it"? What rate of weight loss is too slow? Is less than two months on a diet before it starts to stall a sign? Is losing 20 pounds in half a year too slow? Any input is appreciated.

3 months today on my Vey Low Calorie Diet (VLCD)

It all started in February when I went to my GP, I'm 29M, my BMI was 39, my blood pressure was becoming dangerously high and my weight was starting to put pressure on and damage my heart. She recommended a VLCD and said it should hopefully help these issues.

Started on an official medically supervised VLCD in April. So I've been having 3 shakes and a soup per day. 800kcal altogether. The products make sure you get all the vitamins and nutrients your body needs.

The first week was the hardest, I felt so weak, had headaches, insomnia, all I could think about was food. After the first week you get used to it FAST. And the weight loss has been incredible. I was 18 stone exactly when I started. I'm now 14 stone 7 pounds so that's a total weight loss of 49 pounds in 3 months!

I'm thrilled but at the same time I wish I hadn't let my health get so bad before I decided to lose weight. However my blood pressure is coming down steadily now and is nearly in normal range. I don't sweat anymore when walking, I don't get out of breath when walking. I feel so much healthier and have more energy.

3 more months to go on the programme and hoping to achieve a normal healthy weight! Wish me luck. Feel free to ask me anything 🙂

Bunch of little NSVs

Hi all. Just wanna share some nice things.

I'm doing strict OMAD, 1200cal a day. (I've got medical oversight so nobody panic.) In three weeks, I've had one cheat day. I'm also hitting the treadmill a few times a week, 11-12% incline and 3-3.5mph speed.

I had to punch new holes in my belt. It's a good thing I had three holes punched at once - I'm already at the second new hole.

My button up shirts are all sagging. I had a couple that were starting to get too tight to wear, and now they're both comfortable and have a bit of extra room.

I had to break my OMAD for a social and, for maybe the first time in my life, I felt nauseated because of how much I ate (I had a chicken sandwich and fries, and couldn't finish the fries).

I've logged my calories every single day for three weeks. Also a probable first-ever for me.

I'm seeing my GF for the first time since starting my weight loss regime, and I'm hoping to surprise her with how much I've shrunk. Wish me luck!

Counting Calories is Holding me Back

Been on my weight loss journey as a 5’5 240lbs female who struggles with binge eating and PCOS for about three months. I’ve lost some weight and have been feeling pretty good but I’ve come across many obstacles. The biggest one of all is calorie counting. It’s not staying under my limit, it’s tracking it. Having to go into my app, search the internet for a possible estimate of the calories, and then tracking something that could potentially be the correct calorie intake. It’s especially hard when going out to eat with friends and secretly being on your phone finding an option that is in your calorie range. Honestly the whole process is so tedious and discouraging. I wish I could eat healthy without the whole calorie thing. Does anyone else struggle with this?

Help needed....please no judgement

Okay so here goes.....I need help to know how to lose weight. I'm at my heaviest and feel I'm at my rock bottom. I am a 38 yo female, 5ft 7, weigh almost 24 stone. I NEED to lose weight, I don't sleep properly, I'm tired ALL the time, ache and sore, bad feet and ankles. I can feel my quality of life slipping away from me.

Thing is, it sounds stupid but I feel like I don't know how to lose weight. This weight has piled on over the years and I've never successfully lost any weight. I need someone to tell me without any sarcasm or judgement something I can do to just start and keep it up. I suspect I may have undiagnosed ADHD so I struggle to keep up with things, stay motivated. I don't enjoy cooking, at this point it feels like a chore so the easier the better.

Couple of things I should say, I have pcos so am constantly hungry even when I've just eaten and apparently weight loss would be harder snd slower for me? In terms of exercise even walking hurts me now ☹️ my back and feet etc. And food feels like the ONLY pleasure in my life right now as I go through marriage problems and having a child diagnosed with something that I just can't seem to accept and come to terms with.

Officially hit onederland

(19f) I woke up this morning and weighed myself and I am officially down 45 pounds, finally below 200! (Starting weight was 244.)

Two days before I started HEALTHY cico in February, I had ZERO plans to change my life so drastically. So much so, that on New years, I didn’t even make a resolution or goal to lose weight or eat healthy.

I don’t even know what changed that day in my mind to make me finally do what I thought was so impossible, but I’m thankful everyday that I was strong enough to stick it out and try as hard as I have.

I’ve been overweight for as long as I can remember, and I was obese all through high school. My mom never had a good understanding of what healthy weight loss was, although her intentions were always for the best, a lot of the time her ignorance would wind up setting me back. A lot of my life I’ve been fad diet to fad diet, my mom even put me in hypnotism and holistic pill/vitamin taking cus I was so self hating and depressed. Atkins, military, vegan, pescatarian, gluten free, juicing, weight watchers, and many more. And I know you can lose weight on those, but I would lose 10 pounds, cheat, and just sob and sob for the week after.

Just putting myself through misery and for a lot of it, I was 11-15, it was shattering to my self esteem. I felt like I had no discipline or self respect, how could someone diet for years and still be obese?

But that’s all past me now, cico saved my self esteem. My relationship with food is so beautiful now, I can say with absolute certainty that a part of me is made whole now just because I was able to prove to myself that I could and can do it, and I never had to suffer in the first place.

My first recipe ingredients I have created for weight loss.

Yogurt

5.9 carb 6 fat 13 protein

Oats

27 carb 2.5 fat 5 protein

Oat Milk

16 carb 5 fat 3 protein

Whey Protein - 200 Cal

8 carb 3 fat 30 protein

Granola

20g carb 5 fat 3 protein

Carbs - 76.9g

Fat - 21.5g

Protein - 54g

These oats have taught me a lesson about calorie counting, I estimated around how much calories I believed there would be in the oats and I guessed around 500 calories.

I measured out the ingredients and got a grand total of 740 calories.

It’s a bit scary how many calories you could be eating above your limit. That’s why I believe that if you’re not measuring your food, you should aim for around 500 calories less from your deficit.

This experiment made me realize that oats are too heavy and therefor I will not be eating them.

I’ll just chug two shakers of protein. 👍
