How did I get here?

Hi everyone. I am so happy to have found this community as I begin my real fitness journey. I’ve had a fucked up relationship with food/weight my entire life (I’m sure many can relate). My weight has fluctuated over the years reaching a high of 145 at 19 (I’m 27 now). I worked hard to lose the weight, and was then at an all time low of 114 at 25 (this is also the time when I went vegan for a year and literally lost 10 pounds in my first week).

2 years ago I realized the vegan lifestyle wasn’t sustainable for me long term. At this time I also got back with my long time boyfriend (we’re engaged now...woo!) and slowly felt myself letting go of many of the health priorities I had as a strict vegan.

I also began teaching full time and used food and alcohol to “de-stress” after a long day. He is also somewhat of a junk food enabler, and we jointly started to care less about health and fitness.

Rewind to last summer I moved from philly to silver spring, Maryland to take a Montessori certification course that took all summer. I was renting out a room in someone’s basement and literally did not have access to a kitchen. I got subway everyday and just felt myself turning into an absolute blob.

I weighed myself at the end of the summer and I was about 139. “Fuck...” I thought. “Oh well I’ll just get healthy now that I’m back at home” I decided.

Well...that didn’t work. While we’ve had weeks of “health kicks” we still got pizza way more than we should and I still drank and snacked as a means of destressing all year. While it was a great year teaching the weight situation got worse. I recently weighed myself and I am officially at my highest ever weight at 151. This is overweight for my height and I feel like an absolute shit.

After reading stories on lose it and getting more inspired to stick to the CICO lifestyle I am getting my shit together. I’m trying to eat about 1,200 calories a day as well as trying to exercise at least 30 minutes a day. Wish me luck!! I will continue to look on the subreddit for inspiration. I am using the loseit app and it’s been fantastic so far. To anyone who has read all of this...thank you for your time and I wish you well on your personal weight loss journey as well ☺️

People Change.

Hello,

This post is mainly about the general reception post weight loss from people. Over the past ten months I have managed to lose around 90lbs, which is a huge achievement and something I never thought I would be able to do when I first set out with the goal of losing weight. Side Note: I do not call it losing weight anymore because as I am reaching my goal it has become increasingly harder which makes me think "I should be losing weight", instead I call it training.

When I was bigger it almost seemed as if I was wearing an invisibility cloak, like the rest of society did not really notice me. Once I left school, they [My friends] didn't interact with me or anything like that anymore. Once I started going to the gym, a lot of them tried re-entering my life, especially the female ones who couldn't care who I was a few years prior to this.

I just find it weird how weight-loss can totally change another persons perception of you and it absolutely horrific to see. With this being said, if anybody is struggling with weight-loss or needs that extra motivation then please message me! If you're just starting out then message me too as I know my way around a good plate of food haha!

What about diet coke?

So it's been almost 2 months since I started dieting and exercising regularly. I'm talking 3 meals per day at exact hours, all home cooked, no bread and minimum amounts of sugar and a daily 10-12 km speedwalk, and I've got the progress to show for it, I've lost almost 10 kg so far with 25 more to go until I reach my goal.

However, lately I've been satisfying my cravings with an occasional can of diet coke, the black kind that screams "ZERO SUGAR" in your face(never more than one per day and usually at the end of my exercise session). Now, I know the can claims to have only 1-2 calories and no sugar whatsoever, but hey, coke is coke, the only truly healthy thing you can do with it is drop it all together. However, I wanted to ask you guys, from a purely dietary point of view, should I trust what it says or is it messing with my weight loss program?

Losing friends

Can we talk about this a little? I’ve seen on this sub how common it can be to lose a good friend once you start losing weight. I didn’t think it could happen to me, but it just did. And it sucks.

My BFF was always the one with the amazing body. I was just the fat BFF with the pretty face. Well, I’ve lost 85 lbs and my BFF. We have kids the same age and we don’t even hang out for the kids sake. That’s probably what hurts the most. I feel so bad for the kids.

She regularly works out and I didn’t. For years I had asked her if we could work out together so she could help me with a routine and it never happened. She always had some excuse as to why we couldn’t go to the same gym, or why she didn’t want to join a class with me. Then I started getting serious about what I was eating and she kept criticizing me that I wasn’t eating enough. Looking back at it, I think she just wanted me to stay the fat friend. When I lost about 50 lbs everyone, but her acknowledged I had lost weight. I didn’t care if she didn’t acknowledge it, thought it was just strange that she didn’t mention one word when it was extremely noticeable. But again, her approval wasn’t necessary so I just kept going without her support. Then when I had lost about 70 lbs she came to me super aggressive one day demanding to know how much weight I had lost (first time she even acknowledged my weight loss). I said I didn’t know (it’s information I just don’t feel comfortable sharing with even my husband) and that I was just going off by my clothing size. She got extremely upset and annoyed I wouldn’t tell her.

We just kept chugging along at the friendship. It felt strained. I’m now 85 lbs down. Two weeks ago we had our falling out. She made it completely unrelated to weight loss, but nothing else had changed. She said she felt different with me. She hasn’t called or texted, when we used to call or text multiple times a day. I refuse to play into the game and haven’t reached out either. I know it’s a two way street, but I’ve noticed she is the kind of friend who is happy when you’re good, she doesn’t want you to be better than her. I’ve noticed this not just with the weight loss, but in other aspects of our friendship: kids, finances, material things, etc. I think the losing weight was just the final straw for her.

I’m sad and feel stupid I didn’t realize what type of BFF I had sooner. Those that have lost friends over weight loss would you say a trait you’ve seen in this friend has been that they want to see you well, not just better than them? (And by see you well, I mean generally in life, not just physically seeing you well/healthier). I’m beginning to think this has to be a character trait of people like this, because why else would they not be genuinely happy for you?

I've lost 22 pounds/10kg :)

Hey, so i've been dieting for around a month (since the 12th of may) and i lost 10kg!!!!! at first i lost 5kg really fast and then the slow down started. So you have to know im a really unpatient with my weight loss. When stay the same weight for 3 days i get tired but this time i never budged. After i switched to CICO my weight stagnated for a week but i've lost 4kg since then!! it sometimes stays the same for a couple of days and then i woosh a kg down. Im really proud that i didnt budge while my weight "stagnated", it sounds silly because its only a couple of days but im really glad!!

im currently 113kg and my goal weight is around 80kg and im 175cm tall, 17 years old

Milestone: no longer obese

So this week I finally dropped my BMI below the obese mark to just overweight. I know there's still a lot of work to do to get to healthy, but right now I'm feeling pleased with this progress! I wanted to share my experiences with you all...

I used to be able to eat whatever I wanted and just exercise like crazy to keep the weight off. I loved my food and wanted to stay in shape so that worked really well for me. However, I have ME, and as my health declined to the point of using a mobility scooter to get around, I failed to adjust my eating habits, and quickly piled on the pounds.

Adjusting your eating habits isn't easy, and life was increasingly difficult, learning to live with disability. My weight wasn't a priority - of course I wanted to lose weight, but it wasn't a priority. I think I tried to eat better a few times, but I'd just give up, using the excuse that food was one of the few things I could still enjoy in life.

It wasn't until I got past that mental block and framed weight loss differently - as a priority for my health, not my looks. I let myself be scared by the increased risk of diabetes or cancer and that gave me the kick I needed to go to slimming world. This really worked for me, I HATE counting calories - I just don't have the energy and end up giving up after a week or two. So no counting calories and the pressure of a weigh in really helped.

Life got in the way and I stopped going. I put a bit of weight back on, but I soon worked through things and made weight loss a priority again. I went back and started losing again.

As much as slimming world worked, it was also an expense I couldn't afford after having to leave my job (due to the ME) and the effort to go to weigh-ins took its toll. I vowed to keep at it at home on my own... And I did. But the weight loss started to plateau and events keep cropping up where I wanted to eat or drink freely.

But weight loss was still important and so I kept trying new things. I now use Huel for a lot of my meals as I have difficulty preparing healthy food. And I've returned to an old friend - 5:2. This has worked for me before and is working for me again now. The fasting I find easy now, and I have the freedom to enjoy a little indulgence on other days.

So what's my point other than sharing my long story? It's this advice:

1) you have to make weight loss a priority in your life. Most people want to lose weight, but only those who want it badly enough to prioritise it will be successful.

2) find something that works for YOU as an individual. I 100% believe CICO works... But it doesn't work for ME (no not because of genetics or that shitty fat logic) but because the counting exhausts me and I just can't keep it up.

3) what works for you might change over time, or might take a few attempts to find. But remember, it doesn't matter if it's worked for your mum or your best friend or that colleague who looks great, it has to work for you.

4) don't worry about taking the scenic route to weight loss, as long as your heading downwards over time, don't beat yourself up too much. It's hard, give yourself a break, then get back on it! You'll get there before you know it.
