Lost 36.2 lbs and it's an emotional rollercoaster

Started losing June 19th of this year at 187.8 lbs. As a 5'4 woman, I knew I needed a change and reduced my caloric intake. Eating at 1350 - 1400 calories a day has been super sustainable for me. Today, I weigh 151.6. That's 36.2 pounds lost. I celebrate my little weight loss victories when I step off the scale for about 10 minutes. Then the disappointment sneaks in. I ask myself why I haven't lost more since my last weigh in. I convince myself that at this rate, it'll take me forever just to get to the 140s. Why tf is it slowing down? Lol. But after all the negative thoughts, I feel some sort of clarity. I remind myself that I've been (fairly comfortably) losing weight. I've been weighing and logging my food. It's not a race. It's a lifelong lifestyle change, not a short sprint to the finish line. I'm good :) I really don't know what I'm trying to say in this post, but just wanted to share my little experience. Hope you all have a happy holidays!

27lbs total lost today!! Just hit below my plateau of 150lbs this morning and weighted in at 148!!

I’m 5’4”, 22 (F) and have been on my weight loss journey seriously for a year today. SW: 175 CW: 148! GW:~135.

In the fall of 2017/2018 I had started eating meat after being veg for 2 years (I was rlly sick from being vegan). I was used to eating volume and didn’t even realize until I got a full length mirror that I had gained A LOT of weight. (Btw meat is very calorie dense compared to vegan food). I had never been above a normal weight of 145, so for me so this was a huge shock. I had back rolls I had never had, had a harder time moving, and was shocked because my 20 year old self was no longer an active teenager able to eat whatever and not gain weight. At the time I realized my aesthetic weight gain, I had a lot of stress going on and felt hopeless. I had never been on a weight loss journey before, didn’t even own a scale, and just thought I’d always be that weight now.

In summer 2018 I went to the doctors and that’s when I found out I was 176lbs!! I was shocked. I knew I gained weight, but 30lbs since the last time I weighed myself (which is a lot for someone who is 5’4”). Like I said, I was again in disbelief.

Anyway, from then on I loosely tried to lose weight, but didn’t really understand/commit. I maybe lost 5lbs from summer 2018to December 2018. But wasn’t tracking because I didn’t have a scale, and honestly that’s a huge motivator for me. (Just an aside, when I can actually see what I’m doing, for example, eating less in the last two weeks and seeing the scale go down, I’m more motivated).

This is when I got a Fitbit on Boxing Day last year, and my boyfriends roommate had an electronic scale so I used that to weigh myself. This is when my journey really started. This time last year, pretty much to the day.

I weighed in as 170 on his roommates scale around December 27th, 2018. I had started counting calories and went for walks at least 4X a week. I lost ~20lbs by June 2019, and most of that came off in the first two months. I was shocked how “easy” it was because all I did was move more and eat less, and was so happy.

I bought a scale myself in June, but this past summer I got a little lazy while working full time at a desk job, and not in school, and lost maybe 5lbs throughout the summer. In September 2019 my boyfriend and I moved into an apartment together and I weight in at 157lbs and knew I needed to get serious again if I wanted to be my goal weight.

So in the last month I’ve been more serious about watching my calories and doing more activity (walking, body workouts etc). I hit 150 at the beginning of the month and I hadn’t seen that number so low since getting the scale and was thrilled. And today, almost a year anniversary of my intentional weight loss journey, I hit 148 LBS during the holidays!!! I’m so thrilled and getting over a “plateau” (really it was just my laziness loll) brings me motivation to really get those last 10lbs off and tone up before summer!

I know a year is a long time to lose almost 30lbs, but I’ve been able to continuously maintain my weight loss and when I fall off track, I just pick myself up and keep going right on track. I also find since I’m going slower it’s easier to adjust to the smaller amounts I’m eating and I’m getting more in tune with naturally not eating bigger portions and more calories without feeling hungry. I’m sooo proud of myself, and I will try my hardest to keep the weight off, and am motivated to keep going. Happy holidays and I wish all of you, whether you’re starting today, in a week, or started 2 years ago, good luck on your weight loss journey AND WE CAN ALL DO THIS :)!!!

Winter Weight Gain: How to Avoid It

Winter can be a harsh time of year for you and your waistline. With shorter days, extended darkness, and frigid temperatures that keep us inside and generally less active, it’s only natural that we seek out comfort in food. Research from the American Society for Nutrition shows that a major percentage of American adult’s weight gain comes during the winter months. Although the New England Journal of Medicine puts the average winter weight gain at just one pound, studies have proven that we can’t seem to shed this added weight post-winter, which can lead to a gradual yet substantial build-up over the years.

So if the winter diet doldrums are upon you, just remember that winter and weight gain don’t have to be synonymous. Follow these easy tips to avoid packing on the dreaded winter weight gain:

Stay Active.
Dear couch potato: Get up! Fight the urge to melt in to your couch when you get home from work. Instead, create an exercise routine, plan it into your day and stick to it. Persistence and regular exercise are key to fighting off the bulge and maintaining a positive and healthy outlook. Or you could simply just go outside, get fresh air and absorb some much needed vitamin D from the sun. You will instantly feel better.

Try on your summer clothes.
Chunky sweaters, baggy sweats and layers upon layers can lull us in to thinking we haven’t gained any weight. Use a summer outfit or a bathing suite to compare where you are weight-wise with where you were just a few short months ago. This reality check can give you added motivation and the reassurance that warmer weather lies ahead. Plus, knowing you’ll be holding yourself accountable is a great strategy to ward off any potential winter weight gain.

Keep a food journal.
For those of us still trying to recover from the holiday indulgences that derailed our healthy eating habits, get back on track with a food journal. It not only keeps you accountable but encourages you to prepare healthy meals and pinpoint the culprits behind unhealthy habits. Try NuMi, Nutrisystem’s FREE online tracking tool, which makes logging food, activity, weight and more simple!

Avoid empty calories.
It’s cold and you want something hot and comforting to soften the bite of that winter chill. Luckily, that doesn’t have to equate to winter weight gain. Indulge in hearty winter foods like chili and soup instead of calorie-dense, cheese-laden or cream-filled dishes that tend to zap energy and send you straight into a food coma.

An offhand comment has made my click how big I'm actually getting.

I joined this sub on a whim, I like reading about weight loss and how everybody does it but I never thought too hard about losing weight. I haven't been uncomfortable with my weight in a good few years.

However, last night my mam made a flippant comment about how when I put on weight, like her, all of the excess weight goes to my belly. I held myself together for the rest of the time I was at hers because she isn't wrong and she was a bit merry (we had a few gins; fuck it, it's Christmas), but once I left I actually burst into tears. I had no idea I was even gaining weight, or I was just ignoring that the zip on my favourite dress bust open and broke a couple of months ago. I've only gone up a dress size in the past 2 years but ultimately I know I haven't been a healthy weight since I was about 18 (I'm 23 now).

I don't know specifically how much I weigh - my guess is around 200lbs - but the calorie counting starts now. I'll have a goal weight once I know how much is healthy for somebody of my height. I have a history of disordered eating so I don't want to be unrealistic. It sucks that I've let myself go but I'm grateful that somebody's actually pointed it out, albeit accidentally.

The fear of losing weight (small rant)

Hi there, day 1 for me. Current stats: 25M, 6’0”, CW 340, GW 220.

I have been wanting to loose weight for some time now but never really had a good place to start. I’ve tried things in the past to loose weight but I’ve never had the discipline to stick with it. The one thing I have been able to continue with my wife’s help is not drinking soda. I went from drinking close to 2L per day to nothing overnight. I still crave it over a year later but I’ve done it none the less.

Well now I am a father of 2 wonderful kids and I want to be around for a long time to see them grow up live their lives with more energy than their dad did. And I don’t want them to know their dad as fat and lazy. So I’m not sure where to start. I know of different diets I can try but I’ve heard they had lasting negative effects on the body, so I don’t know how to start eating healthy and enjoy it. I’ve also never stepped foot in a gym or done any working out since high school 8 years ago so I don’t want to injure myself with this. But as far as fears go I feel like those are trivial because I can figure something out that works for me.

I’m genuinely scared of losing weight because everyone has always known me to be fat. My wife is the kind of woman that has told me she prefers a teddy bear at night to sleep with, and if I lose weight will she still like me for me? And my mom and grandma both had gastric bypass surgery for their weight loss and I don’t want my mother to have bad feelings towards me because I’m doing it my way instead of the surgery that they’ve both told me I should get as well. I don’t want her to think I feel superior because of it because I know everyone’s journey is different.

All I want is to have more energy and stamina. I don’t really care about putting numbers to it, but I don’t want to be out of breath by just carrying my infant’s carrier to the car. And after writing this out I know I’m just insecure about it, but this is new territory for me and way out of my comfort zone. Maybe I don’t need help starting. Maybe what I need is some reassurance that what I’m doing is the right thing from people that I care about the most.

5 Things to Focus on Today Besides Food

For many, today is a day full of celebrations. And although a celebratory spread will no doubt be present, it’s important to remember what the holidays are really about. Regardless of what you celebrate, there are certain aspects of all holidays that you shouldn’t take for granted. Here are five things to focus on besides the food this holiday—and every one thereafter:

Loved Ones
How often do you get to have your distant cousins, your college-age niece and your brother’s new baby all in one room? The holidays have a way of bringing us all together and there’s something really special about that. Take a minute to bask in the beauty of your family. No amount of dessert can make you feel quite as good as they can.

Holiday Cheer
Ever notice how the world seems a little nicer this time of year? People are doing good deeds and budding you happy holidays. Even during your gatherings with family and friends, there is an air of good will. A year from now, you probably won’t remember what side dishes you enjoyed. But you probably will remember how magical your celebrations were. Focus on that fact and it will be easier to skip the seconds.

Making Merry
From playing board games to caroling to gift swapping galore, there are plenty of fun activities to engage in today that don’t involve chowing down on cheese and crackers or an extra helping of ham. Who needs to pig out when there’s festive fun to be had?

The Slower Pace
Sure, the holidays can mean a whole lot of hustle and bustle. But isn’t it nice to step away from the stress of jobs and school and daily routines? Taking a break from daily life is a nice break, even if you are running from house to house for holiday visits.

The Sights, Smells and Sounds
From the sparkling lights to the aromatic candles and pine needles to the festive music playing in the background, holiday celebrations are like a smorgasbord for your senses. Take it all in today; it’s there for you to enjoy!
