Perfectionism, Procrastination and Binge Eating

Recently I've come to believe that there is a link between those three.

  • I have a problem with procrastination in general, which - for me - stems from perfectionism ("I can't do it perfectly so instead I'll do nothing at all")
  • This creeps into my weight loss efforts, for example: "I've over-eaten a bit today, so might as well go crazy and eat loads because the day's already ruined" - it never occurred to me until now, but that's the exact same perfectionism happening!
  • I've noticed over time that one of the times my urge to binge eat surfaces is when I'm procrastinating from doing something (this can be procrastinating from anything, it's not weight loss related - often it's work)
  • I think the reason why I put so much pressure on myself to lose weight as quickly as possible is because I'm being a perfectionist about myself - somewhere deep in my psyche is an implanted belief that unless I'm "perfect" I'll never be good enough. This probably contributes towards my binge eating as well by using bingeing as a type of self-harm (punishing myself for not being "good enough")

I don't have an elegant way of saying all this, but there's no doubt in my mind now that - for me - perfectionism, procrastination and binge eating are closely linked, and treating my perfectionism and procrastination can help towards stopping my binge eating.

It's already helped me - I had a small extra snack between meals today, and didn't let my perfectionist voice tell me "might as well give up".

I also got quite anxious yesterday because I was procrastinating from a work task, and suddenly all I wanted to do was eat, but I noticed my thought pattern and forced myself to tackle the work task - surprise surprise the urge to binge went away!

Just something to think about that I hope will help someone :)

Does anyone else just not see their weight loss despite what the scale or waistband says?

Over the past decade or so I’ve occasionally been a healthy weight but mostly I’ve been mildly to moderately overweight (anywhere between 175lb and 220lb as 6’0 man of 33 but way more at the top end).

At Christmas I weighed about 215lb and committed to losing some of it. Today I weighed in at 195lb having not been below 200 in a few years. I’ve punched a new hole in my belt and managed to wear some jeans that haven’t seen much action recently. Yet I still feel fat and still think I look terrible. Even when I was down at 175lb and running half marathons for fun at a pace I never thought I’d achieve I felt like I was just doing well for a fat guy.

I feel like this is a psychological issue as much as anything but I have no idea how to go about improving it. I’ve always lacked confidence in my appearance and kinda laugh about being an ugly looking guy because it’s embarrassing to let on that I care about my appearance somehow but I’m starting to wonder if there’s something deeper at play here.

Sorry for the rambling post. TLDR: Did you still feel awful about yourself even after losing weight? How did you try and fix that?

Weight not coming off

I am 5 5 f. I have been exercising for 3 months and found out a medication I was on was causing binge eating and was switched from it at 247 and within a week went down 17lbs. In the following month I was able to lose an additional 2lbs. However my weight has gone up a bit this month and for a month I have been stuck at 230 229 and just can't seem to get out of it. The game says I am burning an average of 300cal per day and I even added an aerobic stepper to use instead of running in place.

I have either 380cal for breakfast or 670 depending on if I eat one or two burritos. I exercise over lunch so I don't get a chance to eat lunch no snacks. I have a standard meal size dinner although I find it difficult to count calories as it's homemade leftover combo a lot however I watch my portion sizes for example i ate 4 ground beef tacos with cheese and sour cream and a puch of fruit puree for dessert (70cal) for dinner with water i can estimate the total calories for the day yesterday was 1600cal. The night before a bowl of ramen with a slice of salmon and a pickled egg. I never drink soda and I have not snacked once estimate the total to be 1200cal for the day not counting how much i burned exercising. I have lost 2 inches this month but i don't know if it's my body catching up to the weight loss from last month.

Me being at such a high weight I really should be losing as the calorie tracker i looked up said to maintain I would need over 3000cal and I am eating 1200 to 1600. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? I don't think I can further cut my calories safely.

Hypnotherapy cured my food addiction

Hey folks,

Back with my tail between my legs after my last post in 2019. I managed to lose about 14lbs before being diagnosed with Lipoedema, and the diagnosis and what it meant for my weight loss prospects was too much for me to handle on top of covid. I backslid, ate McDonalds for the first time in 6 months and for the last 6 I had McDonalds almost every day. 💸

Some will be able to relate to this but I never actually wanted it. I just got it because it was easier than wrestling with the craving and then giving in by the evening, disappointing myself and making me feel worse.

I saw a hypnotherapist 7 years ago who cured my lifelong ARFiD in two sessions. I reached out to him again (won't drop the name here because it may seem like advertising) and asked if he could help me with weight management.

Worth mentioning that my relationship with food is something I've already been working on actively with my regular psychologist, but something wasn't clicking.

Through the session we realised it was a reparenting issue more than a motivation one and we talked about that for an hour before 20 minutes of hypnotherapy.

The cravings that have been ruling my life and the battle I've been having with myself is gone, and I'm ready to start working towards my lifestyle goals again.

I am consistently eating 1,400 calories a day under my TDEE, but my weight loss has dramatically slowed. Please help!

40 year old male, 6’2, SW: 460lbs on 1/8/21, CW: 409lbs.

Sedentary activity level, Well hydrated, I do not track macros but am getting a generally balanced amount of each.

My TDEE is 3,400 calories per day, and I have been consistently eating only 2,000 per day since the start of my weight loss journey.

I use a food scale and MyFitnessPal to track everything I eat, and have been extremely consistent. I have only had one binge during this time (a few months ago), and the isolated incident was a surplus of less than 1,000 calories.

Since 4/3, I have only lost 1.5-2 pounds. I am concerned that I have damaged my metabolism, and am not sure what to do moving forward. Thanks for any insight or guidance!

If a close friend responds negatively to your weight loss, that says more about them than it does about you.

Plus, they are not a good friend if they are not supporting you. Cutting that fat out of your life doesn’t just have to be from your body, as it can be relationships as well.

Losing a lot of weight has made me reflect on the people closest to me, and realizing a lot of them enjoyed sharing in my misery from when I was bigger. Now that I am thinner and healthier, all I hear are negative comments from some of these people, which is obviously triggering for them so they project their own unhappiness onto me. Since I don’t hold space for those feelings, I shall shed them too.

Stay strong everyone; this is a wild ass journey that we’re all on together.
