Stuck in the Middle with You

So. I'm 40 pounds into what will hopefully be about a 100-pound loss and I am losing my mind, a little. First, I've been really successful; the SV and NSVs have been rolling in. I'm more active than probably any other time in my life. I feel great!

But. I am impatient for my goal weight range. I am impatient for straight-sized clothing, buying a bra off the rack, not having my belly stick out, just being THERE and having accomplished it. I know what it is like to be in my goal weight range, as I've been there several times in my life. I want it back!

What that means is that I am BORED and FRUSTRATED and feel like I'm in the Midwest US of weight loss. Flyover country. I live in the Midwest, so I'm allowed to say that! There is some beauty to be had here, sure, but man I want to make it to Cali and feel the sand in my toes. I might also be travel-deprived because of the pandemic, lol. All I can see is Nebraska ahead, and what's worse, I know that it will naturally be slower and slower the lighter I get. God, Nebraska is boring to drive through.

Anyway, here is my lightbulb moment: this is maintenance practice. In maintenance, you have no "goal," it's steady state. And yet you still have to work at it, for a lot of us continuing to count calories and making healthy decisions. What's more, at goal, aside from some tweaking from recomp and hopefully a bit of tightening up of the skin (please??), the body we have is the body we're going to get. After the thrill of a goal met goes away, we'll still have things we don't love about our bodies. The me who is sitting here jiggling a belly is going to be jiggling a (smaller) belly at goal, frowning at stretch marks, and soon, because I'm middle-aged, wrinkles!

I have a lot of processing to do to figure out how to "do" this part, but I have some ideas to implement. My theory is that working on this now will help me when I get into maintenance. Please add your own suggestions below!

  1. Throw yourself into hobbies and passions. Weight loss is not your hobby and shouldn't be taking up all of your time and attention. Try badminton! Painting! Skydiving! We just bought an RV. Seriously, it's helping.
  2. Create fitness goals that are uncoupled from weight loss. Increased distance walking, better running time, a new swimming stroke, whatever. Meet that goal and make the next one.
  3. Find new variations on the routine that is helping you to lose weight. I have an all-protein breakfast, which I was using a shake for. I've switched to eggs with low-carb veggies. That sort of thing.
  4. Buy new clothes. Yes, I know you're not done losing weight. Just buy 1-2 new things that you feel GOOD in that you look good in. Celebrate the body you're in NOW!
