When does it start showing :(

SW 198 CW 176 GW 145 Female 18 5'4

I started my weight loss journey exactly about a month and a half ago and I've lost 22 pounds through cutting calories and I want to lose about 30 more.

But I feel like I look about the same especially my stomach area. My upper waist and back definitely got slimmer and so did my legs but how do I get my stomach area specifically to lose weight as well as my arms?

I have started running 3× a week but I am an extreme beginner at it and I play tennis 4 times a week should I start lifting weights at the gym? Will this help me look better?

I was planning on losing the weight first and then start lifting but would it be better to start lifting now? I'm a complete beginner at lifting aswell so any advice on how to start would be greatly appreciated!!!

Its extremely demotivating to see results on the scale but not in real life because it somehow feels like all the work I've put in has been for nothing and I've achieved nothing and I'm not sure if it's all in my head.

Don't feel so bad if you have a bad week of eating.

I started my weight loss journey on 19th May. So far I've lost 46lb. I still have 42lb to lose, but I'm happy with my progress, so far.

The last 8 days have been hell. I decided to treat myself on the 1st day. By the 2nd day, rather than just cracking on with my healthy diet, I let guilt push me back to all the foods I shouldn't be eating. This went on for days. I got the the point that I didn't want to step on the scales to see the damage I'd done. I felt like I was destined to gain the weight back and be fat forever. Bad eating habits are so hard for me to break and I was scared the bad habits had me trapped again.

Well, yesterday morning I thought I'd step on the scales and scare myself back into healthy eating. I only gained 2lb, of which is probably just water weight. I feel so stupid for spiralling. But the relief helped scare my guilt away, allowing me to get back on track.

Just wanted to share incase anybody else is riding the guilt train and don't see a way out. Just step on those scales, so you know where you are and can make a plan.

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Thursday, 15 October 2020? Start here!

Today is your Day 1?

Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren’t sure of how to start? Don’t worry! “How do I get started?” is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we’ve found most useful for getting started.

Why you’re overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don’t cheat the numbers. You’ll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you’re eating you won’t stick to it.

Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it’s own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel awesome and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn’t necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don’t need perfect. We just want better.

Additional resources

Now you’re ready to do this. Here are more details, that may help you refine your plan.

I am scared to start my weight loss journey.

Hey guys, I’m a new comer to this Reddit. I’m 17 years old and 154kg. I am 6 foot 7 and I have struggled with weight my entire life through overconsumption of food.

I’m scared of telling my parents that I want to loose weight. It’s not that they are judge mental or anything but it’s just an awkward conversation to have. They have previously put my up for swimming classes and even signed me up to the gym but I didn’t take it seriously, however, now I have motivation like I never have before. It’s just really hard for me to have the conversation with them.

Secondly, I am scared of going to the gym. I am scared of being judged for what I look like. I live in dubai and people here are really judgy and there’s no real way to get around it.

Lastly, I don’t know when to go to the gym. The best times. I don’t know what to do when I get there. I don’t even know how to start when I go. Do I focus on cardio because my main goal is weight loss or do i mix it up.

Can someone please offer me advice for myself as well as any others in my situation.

Balancing Social life during Weight Loss

Sup reddit. Anyone else find themselves pretty socially isolated when going through a health kick or trying to drop some weight?

Before covid, in January I hit a goal of having lost 75 pounds and went into maintenance mode. Felt great! Then when everything shut down, I lost access to my gym, and had noo motivation to try at home workouts. That along with eating comfort food during quarantine led to me falling off the wagon hard.

Now that things are stabilized, I have been trying to work hard on getting back to goal. Going to Jiu Jitsu about 3-4 times a week and squeezing in 2 days of lifting. This along with making sure I'm eating clean, I tend to avoid temptations like boozing with friends or going out to eat. This has led me to feel kind of socially isolated to stick to these good habits. I'm single too, so naturally would like to not fully sacrifice social outings.

Any other people experience the same? How do you balance it out to where you still have a social life, but stick to your discipline?

SV + NSV in one. I had my first follow up doctors appointment since my journey began (again)!

I’ve started this “journey” to lose weight so many times, but this time it feels real. I decided this year to go to a Weight Management clinic. I first went in February, when my weight was between 260-270. I was put on a diet and it was going well at first. Then the pandemic hit, and I fell off the wagon. I fell off the wagon so hard! By August, I ballooned up to 290.

Then one day it hit me. I need to figure something out. My clothes aren’t fitting. I feel HUGE. And I just don’t feel good about myself in general. I don’t have any health conditions, but I don’t want to get to that point. I want a long, healthy life with my husband (and our cats!)

I made an appointment at the clinic and it went really well. I was put on a medication called Vyvanse. It’s to help with ADHD and binge eating disorder. I have never been officially diagnosed with BED, but since I have ADHD and I used to overeat terribly, my doctor wanted to give it a shot. I also am doing meal replacement shakes during the day. I’ve started going to the gym a few days a week to strength train, because I want to be strong and build muscle. I then have a large meal and snacks on the days that I go to the gym. I’m tracking my calories and so far I’ve lost 22 pounds!

I feel like these are changes that I can handle. I never thought I’d be a “gym goer” but I can’t believe how good it makes me feel! It’s such a great mood booster and stress reliever. I know that weight loss comes down to calories in and calories out, so for me, the gym is more about building endurance and muscle.

Today, I achieved a SV and a NSV. I had an appointment with my primary care doctor today. He knew I was going to the Weight Management clinic, but he didn’t know about my progress yet. I already knew I lost 20+ pounds but I was so excited to step on the scale at the doctors office! I never thought I’d say those words..

When my doctor came in and noticed my weight loss, he was so impressed! He looked at me and said, “there’s less of you!” It felt great to hear him say that and for him to be genuinely happy for me. I feel motivated already but the extra push is nice.

My next Weight Management appointment is in 2 weeks, and I’m looking forward to it!
