Weight loss and athleticism/speed

I took up boxing a couple months ago as part of my goal of losing weight and love, love, love it, can't recommend it enough for people who want a crazy good workout while learning self-defense. It's intense, it's awesome, I look forward to it every day whether I'm in class or drilling at home. But I noticed a lot of people over in the boxing sub are a lot faster than me, both on their feet and with their punches and stuff, including the ones just starting out.

Asked my coach about what I could to improve and he said I was fast "for my size." That caught me off guard. I guess it shouldn't be a factor that slips my notice but after years and years of carrying all this weight around I guess I got used to the speed I move at. When I'm pushing myself I'm not as fast as other people but I chalked it up to being purely out of shape. For some reason it never occurred to me that all this excess weight is holding me back. Which leads me to probably my stupidest question yet: For those of you who lost weight and got into sports and stuff, did you notice a marked difference in your speed, agility, endurance, etc.?

I guess I just feel like I've always been kinda middle of the pack, at best, but I've also always been overweight at best, so I dunno what to expect from further weight loss.
