My thoughts on weight loss

I thought I’d post some insights into a few things that seem to commonly crop up, and how I dealt with them.

  1. Depending on how much you have to lose (in my case is was a lot) it’s going to take a while it took me almost two years (with a few regressions) to lose about 62kg / 9.7 stone / 138 lbs which is average at 1.6kg a week average.

  2. Do not weigh yourself everyday, I went through a period of doing this and it made me despair, i have seen my weight fluctuate by as much as 1.3kg between days, this is heart breaking. So now I weigh myself only once per month.

  3. Water, water, water... drink loads of water, put on loads of water weight, combined with weighing yourself continually is, well devastating. Don’t ever stop drinking water, it helps your skin retain its elasticity, which is important as you will have a lot of lose skin. When I put on weight that logically must be water it takes about 5 days for it to go back down again, yet another reason why daily weigh ins are bad, for me anyway.

  4. Salt, I have discovered one of the reasons weight fluctuates or why mine does anyway, based admittedly on purely anecdotal evidence. I try not to eat too much salt, and won’t add any to food.

On the occasions I have had an excessive amount of salt the day after I weigh a thermodynamically impossible amount more, which is to say that the amount of calories required to the weight increase to be based in storage of energy as fat would have meant I consumed my over 8000 calories in a single day, I can most certainly assure I have not.

In conclusion, it’s hard, very hard, and it’s not instant gratification either. It may be the hardest things you ever do, do not stack the odds against yourself. Remember that if you stick to your plans you will make progress, it’s just that the progress will likely be slow.

Instead of weighing yourself, try measuring yourself instead, I only weigh myself once a month now, I do measure my % body fat and measure myself once a week.

I don’t know if any of this I especially helpful, I hope it is.
