Hey y'all
I'm a 21F who graduated college last month.
In February, I was chilling at a friend's apartment and I needed to use the bathroom. I noticed that there was a scale in his bathroom. I hadn't weighed myself in a pretty long time because my roommate keeps her scale tucked away under the bathroom sink, so I used his scale
The scale said 143.6 lbs
It took all of my willpower to not burst out crying in his bathroom. I'm 5'2, so that weight would put me at a 26.3 overweight bmi. The weight on my driver's license was 120 lbs, and I couldn't believe I was this oblivious to my weight gain. Despite this, I kept up my poor eating habits because I had a very stressful last semester of undergraduate.
After seeing a prominent double chin in most of my graduation pictures last month, I knew it was time to make a change, especially since I'm starting graduate school in the fall. If I didn't make the effort to fix my habits now, I'd have no time to do it when school starts back up.
A few days after graduation, May 16, I began counting my calories and working out. My roommate had moved out of our apartment for the summer, and she took her scale with her, so I don't know what my starting weight was. I'm assuming somewhere around 142-145. I was still on campus for part of the summer, and I had no clue that our spring tuition still paid for gym admission during the summer so I didn't start to actively weigh myself until a few weeks after working out/dieting.
This is the before/after. May 16 vs June 16.
- I was the estimated 142-145 lbs in the first picture, and in the second picture I'm 136. As of today, June 20, I'm about 135.5. I didn't really take any other angle pictures such as these because I was so ashamed of how my body looked.
Dieting:
- I cut most of the junk food out of my diet and I stopped eating out as often as I normally did. I think I've eaten out maybe 4-5 times this month, compared to the 3-5 times a week I would normally do during the semester. I'm also eating much smaller portions compared to usual, and shooting for around 1500 calories a day. I was hungry ALL the time the first few weeks, but now my body is used to the smaller portions.
Exercise:
- I used the lose weight in 30 days app for Android. (iOS version here) I also went to my campus gym almost every day for at least 1-2 hours. I would alternate between the stationary bike and weight lifting, I didn't really have a set routine
As soon as I plugged the 136 in the BMI calculator and saw the 24.9 Normal BMI display, that's when I busted out crying.
Reading the posts in this sub has definitely been a big inspiration for me to continue on this weight loss journey and to eat better. I wasn't THAT overweight to begin with, but this subreddit gave me the affirmation that weight loss can start at any size and any fitness level. My ultimate goal is to get back to the weight that's on my driver's license, 120. I know that won't be easy and it won't be quick, but I'm committed.
