Weight loss/ muscle gain

So to start I’m a little on the chubby side with not much muscle on me, I’ve recently been going to the gym and have been noticing some progress, I am currently on a low calorie diet. What I’m wondering is if I should eat a lot of protein and “bulk” to put on muscle mass and then cut. Or would it be easier to just eat a low calorie diet and continue working out while losing fat and gaining muscle. My main question is, how hard is it to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time
